Outreach in Action
June 2006

Recently the Diocese received a letter from Rev. Dr. Carolyn Langford, who is carrying out mission work in Uganda.  There is great poverty there and conditions are difficult: she begins her letter by saying

"I am writing this note by candlelight as the power is off.  By rights we should have power as we had none all day.  It did come on at 7:00 this evening but has gone off again."

Later in the letter she comments:

I had the most wonderful experience last week at a school that is supported by the Diocese of Rupert’s Land (southern Manitoba).  Fisher Branch High School is a residential school just outside of Mpigi, a major town in our area.  They have over 160 students.  I was invited to formally present a 29” TV that had been donated by Canadians.  To my delight I found that those Canadians were the parishioners and friends of St. James’, Church in Manotick in my own Diocese, the Diocese of Ottawa!  The staff and students at the school were ecstatic to receive such a gift – especially with the World Cup of Soccer on!  I was delighted to give them that joy on behalf of the folk of St. James’.

The photos above show the TV being unloaded and set up as part of the educational (and recreational) equipment at the local high school.  Special thanks go to Marion Fleming of Saint James', who initiated this project and helped to see it through to a successful conclusion.
