An Arctic Experience
Sunday 7 February 2010

The Cathedral Church of Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Iqaluit, Diocese of the Arctic, was destroyed by fire in November 2005.  The spiritual home of thousands of Anglicans throughout the Arctic will be rebuilt, but the cost is high owing to the expense of shipping all the materials to the north.

On Sunday 7 February Saint James' was host to Inuit throat singers Linda Brown and Heidi Langille, as well as expert carver Henry Kudluk. During the service Linda and Heidi told us something of northern customs, and illustrated with throat singing, a unique two-person chant which was greatly enjoyed by the congregation.  After the Eucharist a caribou stew lunch was served in Tomkins Hall, followed by an auction.  All proceeds go to support the rebuilding of the Arctic Cathedral

As a parish we should like to thank Linda, Heidi, and Henry.  As well, we are grateful for the work of Garth Hampson, Geoff Macmillan, Shirley Hilchuk, and Frank Sisson - and, of course, all of the many additional volunteers who helped provide this memorable experience.
